[125] He came to America as one of the Robert Gorges company at Wessagusset(Massachusetts) where Thomas Weston, Pilgrim Mayflower finacier,failed in his 1622 colony." Thomas resided at Charlestown in apallisaded and thatched house on the south slope of Breed's Hill. Hewas a blacksmith. He was a staunch Anglican who which caused him toget into trouble with the Puritans. This caused him to move toPortsmouth about 1631. In 1640 he was one of Portsmouth's two wardens.In 1640 he had land on Great Island. His major holdings were at thehead of Sagamore Creek (Newcastle, NH). He is described as, "one oldplanter, called Thomas Wlfourd who would speak Indian and who fed (thepassengers on the arriving Mary & John) an austere meal of boiled basswithout even bread to eat with it," and who then guided the settlersup the Charles River (June, 1630) while interceding with the Indiansfor their safety. He was one of the grand jury in 1654. He died about1667, leaving an estate of 1433 pounds.
