He was one of the most famous captains of his time. He accompanied hisbrother in-law, the Earl of Northampton, in his expedition to Brittanyearly in June 1345 and defeated the Franco-Bretons at Cadoret, nearJosselin, 17 June 1345. Appointed Lieutenant for the said Earl inBrittany, 28 January, 1345/6. Defeated Charles de Chatillon, dit DeBlois, 3 Jun 1346. Appointed Lieutenant and Captain for the King inBrittany, 10 January 1346/7. Defeated Charles de Blois at the battleof La Roche-Derien, near Treguier, 20 June 1347, and took himprisoner. For this exploit he was awarded 25,000 florins de scuto, 4September, 1348, having had 1 September a grant from the Earl ofNorthumberland, to him and his iwfe, of all the castles &c., inBrittany, forfeited by the Lord of Leon [Herve VII, Sire de Noyon]. Hewas summoned to Parliament 13 November 1347 and 14 February 1347/48 bywrits directed Thome de Dagworth, whereby he is held to have becomeLord Dagworth.
