[1247] Blanche was betrothed to Louis because of a treaty between PhilipAugustus and King John of England, and was brought to France in thespring of 1200 by John's mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The treaty wassigned 05-22-1200 and the wedding was celebrated the next day. Sheproved to be a strong and high-tempered leader, shrewd in her owntreaties - "Saint Louis owed his realm to his mother, who brought himup strictly and according to devoutly Christian principles; and healways remained somewhat under her influence." Blanche held Valois,1240-52; on her death it passed to Jean Tristan, a younger son ofLouis XI - and thence passed to Philip III who gave it to his son,Charles
