[709] In 1738 he received an emigration permit for himself and hisfamily to leave Germany for America. His stated destination was "TheCarolinas." In the fall of 1738 Stephen Braun with his wife andchildren embarked from the port of Rotterdam in the British ship"Glasgow,"Capt, Walter P. Sterling. commanding. On September 9, 1783the "Glasgow" arrived at Philadelphia and a day or so later the malepassengers executed an oath of loyalty to England. For some yearsthereafter Stephen Braun and his family lived along Muddy Creek in thetownship of East Cocalico in Lancaster COunty, Pennsylvania. PossiblyStephen was "working off an indenture" to pay for his passage, andpossibly working as a blacksmith and tool maker, a trade he learnedfrom his father. In 1759 the first records of the Braun family beganto appear in North Carolina. Stephen, along with German-born sonsJacob and Michael, obtained land from Lord Granville along Crane Creeksouth of Salisbury.
