From conversation with Lois 24 April 1993
Grandma was very frail all her life. She had consumption and had tosit up
nights in order to breathe. Dad took care of her. He even broke inher shoes
for her. (Daddy had very small little feet the same size as Lois'sand she
wears 6 AAAA. She used to try on bedroom slippers to buy for him.)
Dad also did her ironing and much of the housework. Mabel alwaysresented the
fact that "Father brought Mother to that terrible climate and placeout in the
God-forsaken -wilderness (Potato Lake) and then left her there". Makesme
wonder if that memory had something to do with her taking him down toWalla
Walla and leaving him there alone. Does make one wonder.
Dad and Clarence built the house for her in Park Rapids.
She and Dad came to visit Mabel and I assume her sister Live(Louise)who had
married George Perry and lived in Hillyard, a suburb of Spokane.
Since she was sick so much of the time the girls remember she did nothave any
patience with them when they were children. They now understand itwas just
because she was so sick all the time.
Grandma is listed on a census as spinster occupation seamstress. Ihave a
picture of her sitting before her sewing machine.
