His second wife was Elizabeth G. Smith.
He had 9 children by his first wife and three children by his secondwife.
He took up farm work and ran a saw mill and a grist mill and adistillery. He was known for his indomitable energy. The road throughGridley Hollow was named after him. He was one of the men from Virgilwho took part in the war of 1812. In 1829 he was elected one of thetwo Overseers of the Poor and held the office for one year. In 1832 hewas elected one of the three commissioners of highways, an offficeheld for three years. He and his father came to Calhoun County,Michigan in 1834 and lived near Homer, Michigan. Reuben purchased 40acres in section 29 and 80 acres in Section 32 of Albion Township andadded to these 96.68 acres in Section 19 in 1837. He purchased anadditional 44 acres in 1835. In 1837 he bought 320 acres in Section 15in Kalamo, Eaton County, Michigan.
