He was on his way to visit his mother's brother at the "NewVillage" (Hurey) when the Indians attacked on June 7, 1663. He wascaptured by a Wappinger Inidan named Wamassaun. During his captivitythe Indians threw burning coals and ashes from their pipes upon hishead, which scarred it. For the rest of his life he wore a redstocking cap on his head. He became the Captain of the Ulster Countyfoot militia in 1700 against the Indians.
Shortly after his wedding to Anna Hussey (his second wife), Jochemmoved to a place known as "Mombacces" (now the town of Rochester inUlster County). On June 25, 1703 he was nominated and appoionted asone of the first trustees of the Rochester Patent. He was trusteeuntil 1715. He was a lso supervisor of the town from 1709 to 1712.
Jochem's will was dated December 12, 1728, and was originallywritten in Dutch.
